Recently I have been assigned the task of getting my organization to be CMMI certified. Our company provides software testing and software development services. It is a midsized company at the moment but will be expanding in near future. It’s already ISO 9001:2000 certified for long now. After studying the CMMI ccna security ver 1.2 model, I can relate the model to Development domain, however already having quality checks in place for QA services because of ISO standards I am not sure how much ROI will CMMI certification would bring to the company.
My two cents:
I think companies do not necessarily "select" quality models. It is a need/requirement of the day and it demonstrates a certain level of proficiency in that domain. It sets the standards straight.
Firstly, in this high competitive scenario, Customers would prefer to do business with a ISO/CMMI certified company. It acts a first level of filtering criterion!
Secondly, from company's point of view, these models act as benchmarks and show a ceratin level of maturity the way company would evolve if they adopt these models... They are readily available guidelines which when applied sets the roadmap for process improvements and can bring about tangible results.
Need to go back to CBoK..may be the thoughts are too generic!
It must be the process improvement plan for best product and service. Every company try to follow best practices and trends in business to become successful. Quality models like CMMi/ISO serves as a guide for improvement of organizational processes.
For example: CMMi v1.21 addresses practices that cover the
product’s lifecycle from conception through delivery and maintenance.
companies adopt all these standards not only to improve their products and services but also, when a company is certified the customer has more confidence
