Objective of any audit is to find if the process is being followed and if there are any gaps. Also if the process is followed is it effective and efficient.

Work product audit is done of important work products. e.g SRS, PDD, Project Plan etc. Objective of this is to find whether Work products are made as per organizational standard processes and also if SQA finds some technical defects he can report them.
It is done after the internal technical review on that document has completed. Some checkpoints in work product audit are: 1) Is Organizational Standard template followed? 2) If there is any tailoring in the document then is it as per tailoring guideline or is there approval for the same? etc.
Thanks

What is been discussed above is more related to reviews I suppose. Reviwes is also a kind of audit that's what I assume.
During the work product audit we will verify whether the process as specified in the project plan for that work product is been followed or not. For e.g. if it's agreed that peer review will be done for UTP and COde and UT and IUT will be done then during audit the same will be verified.
